Workshop on Theory of X-Ray Spectroscopies on October 6-7, 2025

We hereby announce the two-day workshop (RXES-and-theory@FXE) on scientific opportunities on ultrafast X-ray spectroscopies in the hard X-ray regime offered by the FXE Instrument of the European XFEL and theoretical methodologies for their interpretation. The workshop will be held as an in-person meeting on October 6-7, 2025. Registration for the workshop is possible via https://indico.desy.de/event/49090/

Thanks to the high repetition rate of European XFEL and a large suite of high-resolution spectrometers available at FXE in the range of 4-20 keV, more advanced X-ray spectroscopies with ultrafast temporal resolution have become a reality. These new techniques combined with a constant improvement in data quality and the increased complexity of the science cases have led to challenges in simulating and interpreting the data. In this workshop a diverse group of researchers, including experimentalists and theory/computational scientists will gather to discuss the existing methodologies, challenges and limitations in simulating different X-ray spectroscopy data in view of ultrafast dynamics. This workshop will also address future directions in the theory of X-ray spectroscopy.

The workshop will be organized around scientific presentations by invited speakers. Discussions of X-ray spectroscopy experimental results and theoretical protocols will be presented. The list of invited speakers includes:

Michael Nowakowski (University Paderborn)

Frank de Groot (Utrecht University)

Tom Penfold (Newcastle University)

Chris Pollock (CHESS)

Michael Odelius (Stockholm University)

Dimitrios Manganas (MPI KoFo)

Marcus Lundberg (Uppsala University)

Frank Neese (MPI KoFo)

Camila Bacellar (PSI)

Juan Nogueira (University of Madrid)

Meiyuan Guo (Uppsala University)

Kyle Barlow (University Basel)

Serena DeBeer (MPI for Chemical Energy Conversion)

The workshop agenda is available here: https://indico.desy.de/event/49090/attachments/98583/136950/XFEL-Workshop_Theory-Xray-spectroscopy.pdf.Besides the scientific talks, a poster session and a round table will encourage the engagement of experimentalists with theory/computational scientists. Ample time will be given to discussions about the current state-of-the-art high-resolution X-ray spectrometers and possible applications, in particular novel methods and extension to high energies (> 15 keV).

More information about the workshop, including the registration details, submission of abstracts for posters and the program can be found on the workshop webpage: https://indico.desy.de/event/49090/
